What the Training Offers

As a glass apparatus maker, students will learn the fundamental handcrafting techniques to create complex apparatuses from glass tubes and rods. The training takes place in the glassblowing workshop at the University of Ulm, which is part of the Scientific Workshop.

Skills and Knowledge Acquired

In this training, students will learn:

• How to use table burners and hand burners
• How to mechanically or thermally separate glass tubes and hollow glass bodies
• How to heat glass in a flame to shape and merge it
• How and when to blow into the molten glass
• How to control stresses in the material during hot processing
• How to drill, grind, and polish glass
• How to read technical drawings and manufacture apparatuses accordingly
• How to use a scale and sliding caliper to check their work
